Wake Up the Mind and Support Digestion with Mint
Whenever I have a fresh bunch of mint—or its more pungent cousin, peppermint—I always find ways to use every last leaf. I steep it in hot water to make a soothing tea after meals, blend it into recipes for a burst of freshness, or simply enjoy its invigorating aroma. Mint is one of those herbs I never like to be without.
A member of the Lamiaceae family, alongside rosemary, sage, and basil, mint shares many of their remarkable health benefits. It has long been valued for supporting digestion, improving cognitive function, stimulating circulation, and relieving occasional bloating.
A Natural Digestive Aid
One of mint's best-known benefits is its ability to support healthy digestion. After a particularly rich meal, a cup of peppermint or spearmint tea can help settle the stomach and ease digestive discomfort. In more persistent cases, a few drops of food-grade peppermint oil may also provide relief when used appropriately.
Much of mint's digestive power comes from menthol, its primary active compound. Menthol has natural antispasmodic properties that help relax the smooth muscles of the digestive tract, allowing trapped gas to pass more easily and reducing cramping and bloating. At the same time, mint stimulates the liver and gallbladder to release bile, helping the body digest fats more efficiently.
Clearer Breathing and a Sharper Mind
Before a breathwork session—especially practices that involve vigorous nasal breathing, such as Kapalabhati (the "Skull Shining Breath")—I often inhale the refreshing scent of peppermint. On cool or humid mornings, when my nose feels congested, I add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to a bowl of hot water and gently inhale the steam. The cooling sensation helps open the nasal passages, loosen mucus, and make breathing feel noticeably easier.

Beyond its decongestant properties, peppermint may also help support brain health. Its invigorating aroma has been shown to increase alertness, improve concentration, and enhance memory. Research suggests that inhaling peppermint may promote learning and cognitive performance while helping protect brain cells from oxidative stress. Some studies indicate that these effects are partly related to its influence on acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that plays a central role in learning, attention, and memory.
An Easy Herb to Enjoy Every Day
Adding more mint to your diet couldn't be easier. Brew fresh or dried leaves into a calming herbal tea, stir chopped mint into salads, sprinkle it over roasted vegetables, blend it into yogurt with fresh berries, or add it to dips, smoothies, and refreshing summer drinks. Even a small handful of leaves can brighten a dish while delivering impressive health benefits.
