The many Benefits of Walking

Some days, I feel an undeniable urge to step away from my desk and go for a walk outside. Even though I live in an urban setting without a park right around the corner, I’m fortunate to see beautiful trees outside my window. Still, when I crave real greenery and open space, I often drive a few miles to reach a nearby trail or green area—and it’s always worth the effort.

That need to walk usually comes from more than just the desire to unplug from my laptop. It’s a signal from both my body and mind: move, breathe, reset. Recently, I compiled a list of local hiking trails and walking paths I can visit not only on weekends but during the week, even daily. I texted a friend and turned our usual coffee date into a walking date. The result? I came home feeling recharged, clear-minded, and noticeably more relaxed.

Walking barefoot on the ground, known as “earthing”, can make you feel calm.

Why Walking Is So Good for You

There’s no doubt that walking offers numerous health benefits—both physical and mental. Studies show that just 11 minutes of brisk walking per day can significantly boost cardiovascular health and enhance brain function. That’s because walking increases blood flow to the brain, which supports cognitive performance and improves memory.

Walking also helps calm the mind, especially when you’re caught in a loop of repetitive or anxious thoughts. Like many people, I sometimes find myself mentally stuck, distracted by worries or to-do lists. A quick walk often breaks that cycle, lifts my mood, and helps me feel more present. It’s also been shown to improve sleep quality—especially when done outdoors in natural light.

The Added Benefits of Walking in Nature

If you’re lucky enough to live near a forest or park, take full advantage. Walking in nature has its own unique benefits. Practices like “earthing” or “grounding”—walking barefoot on natural surfaces—have been linked to reduced stress and improved well-being. In fact, some therapists offer “walk and talk” sessions outdoors because nature naturally enhances emotional clarity and connection.

Of course, it’s not for everyone, but the idea of combining gentle movement with fresh air and natural surroundings is worth exploring.

Make It a Daily Ritual

Whether it’s a short walk around the block or a scenic hike in the woods, making walking part of your daily routine can be transformative. Especially on a beautiful day, take a moment to step outside and tune in to how your body and mind respond. Bring along a water bottle—consider adding a pinch of Cure organic electrolytes for hydration—and enjoy the many benefits this simple habit offers.

Try it, and let us know how walking changes your day. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you.
